So, you’re thinking of writing an adaptation. Maybe a screen version of one of your own books. Or a novelisation of a movie you admire. Or even a stage play based on a true story.

Adaptations bring many advantages. They provide reassurance for producers and publishers that the story has already worked in another medium. According to one survey, half of all Oscar-winning movies have been adaptations.

Adaptations provide material and ideas, saving work researching and developing characters and plot (but by no means saving all the work, as will be seen below).

And if chosen well, they can bring a ready-made audience who are already interested in the story and/or characters involved.

But there are some elephant traps along the way. In this workbook, I look at some of most important issues you’ll need to be aware of, and some ideas for tackling them.
